Off and Running

This week is going to prove to be very busy, and exciting! Today I was able to watch Mark do a demonstration/school enrichment activity. Mark talked with the group about how a rocket works (why it needs guidance, and thrust) and then demonstrated with a balloon, and then with multiple adapted balloons. Then, we did a small demonstation with film canisters (oh the many uses of them!) and Alka seltzer. We put a tablet in each canister, and then a small amount of water and the reaction makes them shoot right up in the air. I would guess that we had a couple go almost 6 feet in the air! The kids really liked just watching the reaction, and the mini pop that each of the canisters made. Finally, Mark got out the bottle rocket launcher, and set off a small pop bottle, and a two liter bottle with various "fuel". We will be going back to this school in a few weeks to launch their own rockets that they will be making in class. I am excited to see what they come up with (and to be honest, I'm planning on designing my own rocket also!)

After the first morning session, we had an office conference. They talked mostly about the programs going on, and we had a small brainstorming session for some other programs that they are putting into consideration.

Right after the conference, we headed over to our last ASP for the one school we have been working with. In order to make things a little easier (think work smarter, not harder!) We did a modified rockets session. The kids really seemed to like the rockets a lot, and it was a really really nice day to be outside!

Tomorrow is crunch day for the Farm Discovery Days Program. It will be Wednesday and Thursday! I am really excited to start putting stuff together, and I hope that I can help make the event as calm (not stressful) as possible.
